MELBOURNE, Australia, March 22. AS industry insiders had expected, Hockey Australia CEO Mark Anderson is expected to be named chief executive of Swimming Australia, a move confirmed this week by Hockey Australia.
Both Hockey Australia and Swimming Australia had planned to announce Anderson’s appointment next week, but various media outlets in Australia leaked the information early, prompting Hockey Australia to issue a statement on Wednesday.
“Hockey Australia is disappointed that this news has leaked prior to the engagement being finalised, but wishes Mark the very best of success in his new role,” the statement reads on the Hockey Australia website. Swimming Australia has not yet released a statement about the new hire.
The news comes just days after Swimming Australia’s longtime national team head coach Leigh Nugent resigned in the middle of restructuring at the top of the organization.
Mark has served as Chief Executive for Hockey Australia since November 2008 and has overseen the implementation of a new constitution and corporate strategic plan, the introduction of new Gold-level partnerships with Fortescue, Ausdrill and ANPHA, the hosting of three successful Champions Trophy hockey tournaments, the creation of the innovative Hockey 9’s tournament in Perth, a strengthening of relationships with key government and state/territory hockey partner organisations and an unprecedented period of financial stability. He will be replacing Kevin Neil, who resigned as Swimming Australia CEO in November.
Anderson is currently taking classes at Harvard Business School in the United States. Hockey supporters wish him well in his new position.
