The Pacific Hockey Institute in partnership with Gold Coast Hockey Association was established in January 2015. With the growing trend of many players and coaches travelling to the Gold Coast for development or relocation, or just the great training environment and weather – Pacific Hockey Institute was born in order to provide local, state, national and International experiences at GCHA, the home of Hockey for the 2018 Commonwealth Games at GCHA.
Brent Livermore OAM is more than qualified to ‘head up’ the Pacific Hockey Institute. With 318 International Senior Caps for the Kookaburras, 67 of them as captain, Olympic Gold Medallist, and a High Performance coach, Brent brings knowledge, experience, leadership, innovation, and passion to the Institute. Highly respected Brent is a role model for Institute members. The Pacific Hockey Institute under Brent’s leadership has the potential to be one of the leading hockey education, coaching, and player development programs.
About the Pacific Hockey Institute
The initiative is to provide all players and athletes on the Gold Coast and nearby region an opportunity to develop their game and take it to the next level. The Pacific Hockey Institute is currently in negotiations to build educational and sporting partnerships with schools, tertiary institutions, and community organisations. The Gold Coast is an ideal hockey training environment because of its facilities, weather, flourishing tourist status, sports science facilities and expertise, and ability to provide access to high level hockey competitions. Papua New Guinea hockey have registered already an interest in using the facilities, and coaching expertise to further progress the goal of being a strong hockey nation in the Pacific Hockey Region.
The diverse roles of the Pacific Hockey Institute include;
High Performance Development:
The Pacific Hockey Institute provides support to player and coach development on the Gold Coast. Its primary purpose is to service our representative players and provide each of these players with a clear pathway to reach their aspirations of Australian and State selection. Secondly it serves the purpose of identifying and developing aspiring coaches.
Futures, T/ID and representative Programs is overseen by Brent Livermore who as the high performance coach, monitors the developmental level of each athlete and guides them through the pathway at the players’ rate. Futures athletes have the added location of Runaway Bay sports centre following an agreement reached between the association and the centre for our high performance athletes. These Squads encompass all representative players to ensure a thorough preparation for representative competition. This concept lessens the workload of the association’s representative coaches and allows them to enter their relative tournament campaign later in the preparation phase to solely work on set plays and reduce burnout.
The junior coordinator and aspiring coaches that service support the programs provides those affiliate clubs who have less coach experience and human resources available to them to have immediate access to coaches so no club is disadvantaged with providing quality coaching. It is a user pays system and allows our more qualified coaches to work outside of the confinement of their own club. This promotes unity and supports a developing ethos of equality amongst clubs that is important for the culture of the association.
Futures (Senior and Junior):
Players selected in Queensland and Australian teams that are not current QAS scholarship holders Players selected as shadows for Queensland teams.
To prepare Qld Identified athletes for national competition in their local town using local facilities. This also allows the head coach to liaise with HQ state coaches to facilitate their programs and report to HQ Coach Manager. Program offers 2 – 3 skills sessions per week and 2 – 3 Strength and Conditioning Sessions, with player programs individualised based on their upcoming tournaments and training needs relevant to their age group.
T/ID Squads: Cubs: U10s, and Joeys: U12s
Queensland TID players from state carnivals & GCHA TID players from representative coaches. To develop identified athletes with the vision of elevating them into the FUTURES group with Queensland representation.
Clubs Support Programs:
Providing Coaching and Support for Clubs who wish to engage Pacific Hockey Institute to come along for Pre Season and or During Season development. Service to provide the clubs with Coach Development/ Accreditation and also assist players in Under 9 – under 15 age groups plus Seniors with additional coaching to what their club requires and engages.
Schools Programs:
Primary School aged children: preferably years 3 – 7. To canvass new members into the sport of hockey and increase the association’s membership base
