It would seem like that Saturday, May 10th it would be like just another day of hockey fixtures at the Tweed Border Hockey Association fields at Murwillumbah, northern NSW …BUT NOT SO!!
As a result of meticulous planning with a great charity cause as the reason the entire hockey association joined together to raise funds for Breast Cancer awareness and research by dedicating the day to be the PINK DAY FOR BREAST CANCER. Looking around I surrounded with a ‘sea’ of pink. Pink was the playing uniform for the day both fully or part thereof. If they were not wearing it as clothes it was in their hair or painted on their body.
You could eat pink cupcakes or purchase pink products. There was fundraising raffles with prizes donated by the local businesses. It did not matter if you were young or old everyone got into the ‘swing’ of the fundraising day. The following photos capture some of the day. ABOUT TWEED BORDER HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
Tweed Border Hockey Association is based in the picturesque Murwillumbah in northern NSW. Although being located in NSW it is affiliated with Hockey Queensland.
Tweed Border Hockey Association Inc. has seven affiliated Clubs – Casuarina, Kingscliff, Mullumbimby, Murwillumbah Redbacks, Murwillumbah HC, Pottsville and Waratahs. Through hard work and dedication of many individuals and clubs and wonderful support of Tweed Shire Council, we are fortunate to support a water-based synthetic turf, a new Hybrid turf and well as two well-maintained grass fields in Murwillumbah.
Five of their seven Clubs are based outside the Murwillumbah area and boast their own well maintained grass fields. Games are played on a rotational system – so, out of town Clubs regularly host competition games – from Minkey and Modified (U7 & U9) through to Junior Girls / Boys and Senior Men’s / Women’s competitions.
Over the years they have been proud to have many players represent not only their Association, but Queensland, NSW and Australia. At present they have locally produced men and women that hail from the Tweed Border Hockey Association that are current Australian representative players. They are Jason Wilson, Matthew Butturini, Dylan Wotherspoon, Andrew Butturini, and Madison Fitzpatrick.
