Recently I read a blog by five times World No. 1 player Jamie Dwyer titled, ‘10 Years at International Level Distilled into 4 Key Bases of Coaching. Do You Have Them Covered?’ Jamie looked back over his playing career and the different types of elite coaches who guided him through his journey. He came up with these qualities which he deemed evident in a success coach;
TRUST
COMMUNICATION
THOROUGHNESS
A BRILLANT PLAN

Reading this blog and as a former hockey coach I was challenged think about the successful sporting coaches I have known and the qualities that contributed to them being successful. I then researched the qualities of a successful coach and as a result of the two approaches the following checklist has been created.
The challenge for those coaches who are reading this article is to tick as many as you can. If your goal is to become a successful coach you will strengthen your strengths and work on your weaknesses.
QUALITIES OF A SUCCESSFUL COACH – A CHECKLIST
How did you fair? What do people like about you as a coach and what you they not? Once you have established your personal inventory you may have found one trait at least that you might consider in terms of a personal coaching goal to work at. The saying ‘different horses for different courses’ holds true. The type of coach you are will reflect the type of coach that is needed for the type of team that is being coached. More of one or more traits that are needed and less need for others might come into play.
